Tricks to Be a Good Basketball Player

Basketball is a game that requires speed, coordination and practice. Basketball provides a cardiovascular workout. The sport also helps build strength and endurance. Basketball can be played with as few as two people, but a typical team consists of 10 players with five on the court during play. Several tips and tricks, when mastered, can help any player advance to basketball greatness.

Stretch First

Before you begin playing basketball it is critical to warm up and stretch. Basketball is a sport that requires flexibility and a large range of motion. The best way to achieve this is to prepare your muscles with a good pregame stretch. You should stretch many muscles before shooting hoops. Be diligent in thoroughly stretching your calf muscles, back muscles and hamstrings. Other muscles that need to be warmed up and stretched include your groin, shoulders and arms. Once your muscles are ready for action, hit the court.

Perfect Stance

The website CoachesClipboard.net recommends that basketball players master the basketball stance. In the basketball stance, keep your feet shoulder-width apart and balance the weight of your body on the balls of your feet. Bend your arms and knees slightly and make sure lean forward slightly, with your head centered above your lower body. Hold your hands at chest level. This starting position allows players to start and stop quickly. From this position it is also easier to pivot or change direction. A correct basketball stance also allows for fast jumping, passing, catching and shooting.

Keep Your Head Up

When you have the ball in your possession and you are running down the court headed for the net, the website InsideHoops.com recommends keeping your head up at all times. If you are looking at the ball or at the floor of the court, you won't be able to see what your opponents are doing. You may also miss any team members ready and willing to help your team score. The site suggests crouching as a way to help you keep your head and eyes up. Practicing dribbling with your head up will help you master this technique.

Jump Correctly

One of the most important skills a basketball player needs is the ability to jump. Jumping correctly takes practice. The Coach's Clipboard suggests that basketball players practice jumping every day for at least five minutes. The site advises practicing a running jump and a jump from a stationary position under the net. To properly jump, bend at your waist and knees. Put your weight on the balls of your feet. Let your hands hang outside your knees. Using force from your feet, ankles and thighs, spring up. Remember to push from your toes and swing your arms upward as you jump for additional momentum.
