Youth sports teach children how to play together and develop their physical and mental skills. Soccer, baseball, basketball, football and other sports teach children how to strategize and cooperate while participating in a healthy exercise. Though youth sports provide children with many benefits, it is important to choose carefully which league your child joins.
Competition Vs. Fun
Learning how to compete is an important part of a child's development. But too much pressure causes children to become anxious about playing, possibly leading them to abandon the activity entirely. Ease the pressure by encouraging children to have fun at all times. Winning is certainly important, and the skills a child gains by competing against others in team sports will stand them in good stead later in life. But knowing how to have fun and not take life too seriously is also important for a child's well-being.
Safety
Most youth sports leagues take measures to promote children's safety. For example, rules and regulations regarding game play typically prohibit dangerous activities that could lead to serious injuries. Still, accidents happen. Head injuries, for example, are dangerous but commonplace. Coaches and league staff should be prepared to deal with emergency situations and to recognize such injuries as concussions, broken bones and muscle tears. Parents should pay attention to their children's well-being after games and practices. Watch for limping, unusually lethargic behavior, bruising and other serious symptoms, and take your child in for regular medical checkups.
Adult Behavior
Coaches and league staff should be positive role models for children. Parents also need to behave well in front of young players. While it is good to be excited about a game, railing about a referee's decision or the bad actions of an opponent sends children the wrong message. Deal with any negative situations that arise in a calm manner. If a parent of a child on the opposing team is baiting you, avoid that person or notify league staff.
Appropriate Leagues
Avoid signing your children up for an advanced league before they are ready. Parents always want children to be their best, so they place their children in situations that challenge them. But in the case of youth sports, learning the fundamentals is essential for future success. Enroll your children in leagues that are appropriate for their skill level.
