Choosing the best set of women's golf clubs depends upon your skill level and swing speed. A very talented and strong woman golfer may be better suited to a man's set of clubs, while an average golfer will find women's sets that are well suited to her game. A novice golfer will also find decent sets of women's clubs that are less expensive and geared towards beginners. In any event, it is essential that the lie and loft and shafts of golf sets be adjusted to fit your individual swing.

Women Golfers

Best Ladies Golf Clubs explains that most women golfers should use sets of shorter clubs with higher lofts, since they usually have slower swing speeds than men. These clubs will be easier to control and will launch shots on a higher trajectory: the slower your swing, the higher loft you need. If your swing speed is above 70 mph, a 3 wood with high loft of at least 16 degrees should work well. If your swing speed is closer to 70 mph or lower, it's better to forego a 3 wood in favor of a 5 wood. Options for irons also depend on swing speed; slower swingers will want to replace many of their irons with hybrid clubs. Many golfers, men and women, use clubs that are too long for them, so make sure your clubs, including the putter, are the proper length.

Excellent Sets

Golfsmith says its best reviewed set of women's clubs is the Adams Idea Ladies Bronze 14 Piece Set. This is a set for a serious golfer, offering high-quality clubs with a high level of forgiveness on mishits. It include a driver, a 3, 5 and 7 wood, award-winning hybrid irons, ultralight graphite shafts that help increase swing speed and premium Winn grips, the most popular grips for professional golfers. A highly rated inexpensive set for beginning golfers is the Zevo Lady XSD 22 Piece Set, but don't be fooled: You aren't buying 22 clubs, since Zevo includes such items as a sleeve of balls and a bag of tees as two of its 22 pieces. Another high quality, albeit pricey, set for average women golfers is the Callaway Solaire 14 Piece Complete Set. It features maximum forgiveness and a draw configuration which reduces the tendency of many golfers to slice shots from left to right.

Best Clubs

An excellent golfer may elect to purchase a woman's version of some of the top rated clubs for men. Women can buy, for example, some of the drivers given a Gold rating by the 2010 Golf Digest Hot List, including the Adams Speedline Fast 10, Callaway Diablo Edge, Callaway Diablo Edge Tour and Callaway FT-IZ. However, club manufacturers focus their attention on men golfers, to an extent that none of the Gold rated irons on the Hot List comes in a model for women.

Your Set

Talented women golfers may prefer to mix and match clubs to put together the best set for their game. There is no law against creating a set with an Adams driver, Callaway fairway woods, Adams hybrids, Ping irons, a Cleveland sand wedge and a Titleist putter. You will pay more money to create a customized set, but you can also achieve maximum performance by doing so. If you ensure that the clubs are the right length, with the appropriate shafts, loft and lie to match your swing, you will be playing the best set of clubs that money can buy. In the end, Dick's Sporting Goods notes that, "buying the right golf clubs is an important investment because it could mean the difference between abandoning the game and playing it for a lifetime."
