Pivoting step machines add a twist to traditional stair-steppers, providing a more intense aerobic workout. Several models are priced right for individuals trying to build a home gym, with portable models available for $130 or less as of January 2011. Test-drive any equipment before bringing it home to make sure it's a good fit for your needs and perform the exercise with proper form and posture.

Types

Certain types of manual steppers, including full-size versions and mini-steppers, are equipped with pivoting action. Instead of limiting your stepping motion to up-and-down movements, the steps swing to the left and right with each downward push of the left and right foot, respectively. Pivoting steppers may come with resistance tubing, handlebars or both. Depending on the model, the handlebars may be stabilized or twist with the outward stepping motion. Some models give you the option of using the stepper alone or with the handles. When shopping for steppers, look for models that allow you to adjust the resistance to match your current fitness level. Make sure the handles or tubing can be adjusted as well to ensure proper form.

Effectiveness

Using stair-stepper equipment at light to medium intensity burns around 150 calories in 30 minutes, based on estimates for a 154-lb. person, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Your calorie burn may be more or less depending on your weight and level of exertion. A high-intensity stepper workout burns 150 calories or more in roughly 20 minutes, factoring in the same variables. The twisting action will affect your exertion, adding to the intensity of your workout.

Benefits

Steppers with pivoting handlebars or tubing engage the upper body and provide an effective aerobic workout. The more muscles involved in the activity, the more calories you burn. Pivoting steppers with adjustable step height give you even more options when it comes to adjusting exercise intensity. If you're looking to save space, mini-steppers are portable, small enough to store in your closet and provide an effective workout. Pivoting and traditional steppers can also strengthen your lower body while improving your cardiovascular endurance.

Considerations

The American Council on Exercise cautions that if a pivoting stepper compromises your posture during exercise, this may lead to knee problems. If you use a stair stepper machine, alternate the activity with other types of aerobic and strength training exercises to give your knees a break and ensure balanced fitness. A well-balanced exercise regimen includes aerobic activity, strength training and flexibility exercise, according to the American Council on Exercise.
