Headache Relief Au'Naturel

Step 1

Fill bathtub with the warmest water you can comfortable soak in. Pour 3 capfuls of lavender oil into warm bath water while the water is running. Allow the running water to mix the oil into the water. Soak in the oiled water for no more than 10 minutes. Rise the oil off, dry yourself and put on loose fitting clothing. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. The headache should subside within 15 minutes.

Step 2

Put a cold compress or wet washcloth into the freezer for about an hour. Cover the frozen compress or cloth with a lightweight towel. Lie on a comfortable surface with pillows elevating your head. Gently rub the compress over your face, covering your head, temples, shoulders, neck and the area under your eyes. Continue this motion for 15 minutes.

Step 3

Pour 8 ounces of water into a coffee mug. Heat the water for one minute in the microwave on 100 percent power. Remove the mug from the microwave and soak one peppermint tea bag in the water for two minutes. Sip the tea slowly to relax your muscles and reduce the symptoms of your headache.

Step 4

Take a multivitamin that contains calcium and magnisum, as these two minerals are thought to work to reduce the symptoms of tension and other stress related headaches.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are allergic to lavender, use another natural oil, such as euclyiptus, sandlewood or peppermint.
  • If you start to feel dizzy, get lightheaded or have trouble breathing while soaking in a hot bath, get out of the bath immediately and get something to drink, as you may be dehydrated. Always cover the cold compress or washcloth with a towel to avoid direct contact with the cold as this can cause mild frostbite if kept on your body for a long period of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Headaches can happen for a number of reasons, including tension, stress and poor general health. Hot baths, cold compresses, herbal teas and proper vitamin supplements all can help ease the pain. Consult your physician before trying any of these options
