Dandruff -- seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp -- is characterized by itching and flaking. It does not pose any health risks but can be frustrating and embarrassing. This condition can prove stubborn to treat but a mix of self-care and medication can facilitate healing.
Step 1
Use shampoos with ingredients that target dandruff specifically. Ingredients to look for include salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, coal tar or tea tree oil. Use every day until you get the problem under control, and then switch to two to three times a week. Tea tree is an exception; you can use that daily. Let the shampoo sit for at least five minutes for maximum effectiveness.
Step 2
Eat a diet rich in zinc, B-vitamins and healthy fats. These nutrients contribute to scalp health and might reduce dandruff. Examples of useful foods include nuts, seeds, fatty fish, olive oil, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, oysters, crab, beef, pork, chicken, egg yolks, whole grains, leafy greens and legumes.
Step 3
Experiment with supplements that promote skin health. Supplements made with gamma linolenic acid -- an essential fatty acid that can improve the health of the hair, nails and skin -- might help. Supplements that contain GLA include borage oil, evening primrose oil and black currant oil. Fish oil also contains rich stores of omega-3 fatty acids.
Step 4
Reduce stress. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, stress may contribute to seborrheic dermatitis. Experiment with different techniques such as exercise, deep breathing, visualization, meditation and yoga.
Step 5
Use styling products less frequently. Excess buildup can increase the oiliness of your hair and scalp, worsening dandruff.
Step 6
Talk to your doctor about prescription shampoos and steroid creams if your dandruff persists even after several weeks of anti-dandruff shampoos and other treatments.
Tips and Warnings
- You might need to alternate between different dandruff shampoos if you find one losing effectiveness. Salicylic acid shampoos can dry the scalp; use a conditioner afterward. Selenium sulfide might discolor gray, blonde and color-treated hair.
- Talk to your doctor before taking any natural supplements to treat your dandruff. Report all your medications to your doctor during this discussion. Taking fatty acid supplements along with blood-thinning medications can increase your risk of bleeding. Tea tree oil can cause an allergic reaction in some people; discontinue use if you notice intense itching, burning or redness.
