A helmet is a vital piece of safety equipment for a softball player. A helmet protects you as a batter and a base runner from stray pitches, hits and throws, as well as from collisions with other players. Wearing a helmet can prevent head injuries, such as concussions. Helmets are so important that it is mandatory for both amateur and professional players to wear them when batting and running the bases during practice and play. When choosing a softball helmet, keep these considerations in mind.

Facts

Before you buy a softball helmet, find out your specific league requirements. For example, the Amateur Softball Association requires that helmets be approved by the National Operating Committee on Standards in Athletic Equipment, the organization that sets performance standards for protective athletic equipment. NOSCAE approved helmets will have the NOCSAE seal imprinted on the outside rear portion of the shell of each helmet. In addition to having certain safety standards, some leagues may specify that players use helmets of a certain color, style or brand.

Fit

A helmet will only be effective if it fits you properly. Generally, they are available in sizes ranging from extra-small to extra-large, but can also be custom made. Softball helmets are meant to fit snugly. Interior padding not only absorbs shock, but also adds comfort. Try on different brands and styles to help you decide what type of helmet fits you the best. Test the helmet out by swinging a bat with it on, or running. Move your head up and down and side to side. The helmet should not bounce or slide down and obscure your vision. Most importantly, it should not fall off. A chin strap may be used in some leagues to help keep the helmet in place.

Features

Recent features have made helmets safer and more convenient for women with ponytails. In the past, a girl or woman either had to put a helmet on over her ponytail bump, resulting in a poor fit or take her ponytail out, an inconvenience. Currently, softball helmets are available with a hole cut out in the back to pull a ponytail through, or a port which provides extra space for a ponytail. Unlike some baseball helmets, softball helmets generally cover both ears for added protection. Face masks can attach to the helmet to protect the player's face. In some leagues, face masks are mandatory.

Fashion

Your softball helmet can be a fashion statement, designed in your favorite color or customized to match your team colors. You can add a team logo decal that is specifically designed for use on helmets. Airbrush your name or number on it so you don't mix your helmet up with those of your teammates. Before getting creative, check your league rules to make sure it is permitted.
