A tandem is a cycle built for two riders. The rider in the front is the "captain," and in addition to pedaling, he is responsible for steering, braking and changing the gears. The rear rider is the "stoker" and is only required to pedal. The first tandem bike was built in the late nineteenth century by Daniel Albone, a British tractor builder.

Benefits

Riding a tandem bike is a fun way to keep fit that lets you enjoy the company of your partner while benefiting from aerobic exercise. Tandem bikes are particularly useful if one rider is not as physically strong as the other, as they solve the problem of the weaker rider not being able to keep up. Furthermore, tandem riding is a safe way of cycling with a child as she will not be required to make decisions when navigating public roads.

Disabilities

Tandem bikes can be used by those with disabilities who otherwise would not be able to participate in outdoor cycling activities. They can be used as a transport or recreational method for non- or partially-sighted people, with a sighted person acting as captain. A 2009 article published in the "Boston Globe" describes how tandem bikes are used to teach children with disabilities how to ride a bike; the lessons are simplified as the instructor rides with the child.

Racing

There are different types of tandem bike races, including mountain bike, track, road and cross-country. There are usually several categories of races at a tandem race venue. Races can involve male partners racing against other male riders, and females racing against females, and also races for mixed teams consisting of male and female riders.

Purchasing

Tandems can be purchased through most bicycle stores. The difference in cost between a high-end sports bike and one of lower-quality that is adequate for occasional leisure riding can be significant; therefore, it is important to shop around and explain to a tandem dealer exactly how you intend to use the bike. It's best to rent one from a bike shop or a leisure park if you are unsure if tandem cycling is an activity you would enjoy and would like to try before you buy.
