Escherichia coli is the bacteria responsible for approximately 80 percent of urinary tract infections (UTIs), according to "Foundations of Nursing." Pure cranberry juice contains proanthocyanidins, which are sometimes effective in treating E. coli-based infections. E. coli is normally present in the colon. UTIs are more common in women than men because women having a shorter urethra than men, thereby making it easier for bacteria from feces to accidentally spread to the urethra and travel to the bladder. Without treatment, UTIs can spread to the kidneys, causing a serious health problem. Therefore, it is essential that you seek medical care if you believe that you are suffering from a UTI. Consult your physician prior to treating your UTI with cranberry juice.
Step 1
Drink 8 oz. of pure cranberry juice at least three times per day. According to "Introduction to Medical-Surgical Nursing," only pure cranberry juice is effective in treating UTIs. Cranberry cocktail does not contain enough proanthocyanidins to be effective.
Step 2
Drink water. You should drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, if you weigh 150 lb., drink at least 75 oz. of water every day. Drinking extra water will dilute your urine, thereby diluting the concentration of bacteria in the bladder, making it easier for your immune system to attack the bacteria.
Step 3
Drink 8 oz. of cranberry juice daily after treating your UTI to prevent subsequent UTIs.
