For kids and teens, idle hands can often lead to getting in to trouble or becoming involved with the wrong crowd. Staying busy offers less time for kids to make bad lifestyle choices. Keeping girls active -- especially after school -- helps promote wellness, reduces the risk of obesity and teaches the fundamentals of physical fitness. Many schools offer after-school programs that are geared toward girls and activities that they enjoy. After-school programs involving sports can help motivate girls to be competitive and learn how to be a team player.

Types

Sports are the best way for your daughter to become physically active. It allows her to participate in a sport that she really enjoys, while spending time with her friends. Most sports practices and games occur after school. Some of the most common sports for girls include gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, golf, track, swimming and cheerleading. Some sports offer open enrollment for girls of any experience level to try out and join the team. Other programs may be offered on experience basis and past sports history.

Health Benefits

It is recommended that children get up to 60 minutes of exercise each day to promote a healthy body and heart. For teens and adults older than 18 -- 30 minutes a day up to five days a week is beneficial, explains the American College of Sports Medicine If your daughter participates in sports she will likely have practice daily or at least three times a week. Practice can include an array of moderate to intense cardiovascular exercises. Regular exercise through sports can reduce her risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and high blood cholesterol.

Sportsmanship

Practicing good sportsmanship allows your daughter to learn how to enjoy the wins and losses associated with playing team sports. Sportsmanship is a building block of childhood character that includes the ability to get along with others, even if you don't want to. A good after school program will teach your daughter to be respectful of coaches, opponents, team mates and officials, explains KidsHealth. Even if she participates in individual sports after school such as golf or track, she can still rely on other teammates for support and motivation.

High-Risk Students

After school programs may benefit girls who may be at high risk for certain lifestyle issues, notes At-Risk. Examples include alcohol dependence, drug use, gang violence, peer pressure, defiance and youth crime. An after-school program as part of her daily lifestyle will give her a place that promotes good self worth, commitment and motivation in a positive environment.
