Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that naturally occurs in your body. Cholesterol is required by your body; however, it can cause health problems if it is too high. High levels of cholesterol can contribute to heart problems, such as heart disease. Maintaining a diet rich in certain vitamins may help you lower your cholesterol to a normal and healthy level.

Niacin

Niacin, also called vitamin B-3, can be used to reduce your cholesterol. The University of Maryland Medical Center cautions, however, that you may experience side effects from this vitamin. High doses of niacin may lead to skin flushing, upset stomach, headaches or dizziness. You should take this vitamin only with your doctor's supervision and care.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B-5 may lower cholesterol. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research shows that vitamin B-5 lowers levels of "bad" cholesterol, or LDL, and raise levels of "good" cholesterol, or HDL. Studies are inconclusive and more is required to confirm benefit. In addition to a supplement form, meats, vegetables, whole grains, beans, kale and avocados contain B-5.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C may lower cholesterol. According to Vitamin & Herb University, vitamin C aids in the metabolism of cholesterol to bile acids, contributing to a healthy level of cholesterol in your blood. In addition to a supplement, this vitamin can be found in foods such as oranges, melons, strawberries, broccoli and spinach.
