P90X is an intense weight-loss regimen that claims it can change your body after just 90 days if you commit to the program. The program, which was designed by fitness guru Tony Horton, is distributed by individual coaches and the Beachbody company. Exercise is the most important component of the program, as demonstrated in a series of DVDs. The series is designed for working out six days a week; each workout lasts approximately an hour. To achieve the promised results, you must follow the program closely.
Exercises
The P90X system contains 12 DVDs, each designed for use on different days. Each video works on a different muscle group. By working different muscle groups on subsequent days, you will create a condition called "muscle confusion," which helps build muscle more effectively. The DVDs include Kenpo X; Chest and Back; Shoulders and Arms, Yoga X; Plyometrics; Legs and Back; Chest, Shoulders and Triceps; Back and Biceps; Core Synergistics; Ab Ripper X; Cardio X and X Stretch.
Diet
The P90X system also includes a three-stage diet plan. The P90X nutrition plan is designed to augment your workouts for maximum fat loss and energy. The first stage, Fat Shredder, limits carbohydrates to 30 percent of daily calories, protein to 50 percent and fat 20 percent. This stage should last four weeks or more if you need to lose a lot of weight. The second stage, Energy Booster, allows more carbohydrates to fuel your workouts and should be 40 percent carbohydrate, 40 percent protein and 20 percent fat. The third phase, Endurance Maximizer, allows 20 percent protein, 20 percent carbohydrate and 20 percent fat. Choose healthy, unrefined carbohydrates, such as whole grains and vegetables.
Supplements
The P90X system is also designed for use with specific supplements. The recovery drink is intended for use after your workout and contains four parts carbohydrate and one part protein. The recovery drink replaces the nutrients your body needs after the intense workouts. P90X also recommends Peak Performance protein bars and multivitamin supplements.
Warnings
P90X promises great results, but it may be too difficult for beginners. If you are significantly out of shape or have chronic health conditions, check with your doctor before beginning a program of this intensity level. The Beachbody company recommends that you complete the Power 90 program first if you are not ready for P90X. Power 90 will increase your strength and stamina levels to make you better capable of handling P90X.
