The Hallelujah Diet is a vegetarian Christian diet that promises to teach you how to eat "the way that God intended." The book, written by Rev. George M. Malkmus, is full of Biblical quotes and spiritual tips to help change, not only the way you eat, but also the way you look at food and its influence in your body.
Raw Foods
The Hallelujah Diet is 85 percent raw and 15 percent cooked. You'll be allowed any fresh fruit and vegetable you want, as well as some raw grains such as raw muesli and dehydrated crackers. You can also add some fresh almond milk and nuts and seeds, as long as they're not roasted. Because most of your foods will be raw, you might feel restricted and end up with a boring diet, unless you're willing to experiment with things like raw soups and sprouted beans and lentils.
Meat-Free
The Hallelujah Diet is a vegan diet. No animal products of any kind are allowed in the program. This includes not only all meats, but also eggs, dairy, honey and animal derivatives, such as gelatin. You will get your protein from beans, which are part of the "cooked" 15 percent of your diet. Even then, the diet has a limited list of beans you can eat.
Treats
Since this diet is meant to improve health and cure disease, you are only supposed to focus on foods that are good for you. Sweets, fatty foods and desserts or treats are out of the question. You can have raw, unfiltered honey and stevia as sweeteners, for example, but you can't eat anything that contains regular white sugar. Eating out while following the Hallelujah Diet would be very difficult.
Medical Care
Although the diet doesn't explicitly tell you to avoid doctors, Rev. Malkmus spends much of the book explaining why his diet is much better than standard health care. He also emphasizes that his experiences with doctors were all about pain, but resulted in little, if any, healing. Hallelujah Acres, a company owned by Rev. Malkmus, sells a variety of supplements, nutritional powders and drinks that are purported to be "better than medicine." The company also sells a series of videos with the message that traditional medicine is "against God's will." If you're looking to follow the diet faithfully, you'll find yourself restricted in your use of traditional medicine.
