Many bikers and bicycling enthusiasts have switched over from traditional clip-and-strap pedal systems to clipless bicycle pedals. Clipless pedals have many advantages for longer bicycle rides. There are two main clipless pedal systems, and choosing the right one for you is all about knowing the advantages offered by each system.

Definition of Clipless Pedals

The term "clipless" is actually a misnomer. Traditional bicycles were built with plain pedals or pedals with toe clips that you slid your foot into and a strap that secured your foot to the pedal. These straps helped keep your foot steady and well placed on the pedal. Clipless pedals work with special cleat shoes that snap into a receptacle on the pedal. This allows your foot to snap into the pedal easily and remain firmly planted.

Road Bike Pedals

Road bike pedals are designed for use with road bikes. These shoes are light and stiff and have cleats that protrude from the soles of the shoes. The cleat location makes these shoes difficult to walk in. However, road bicycles are usually used for cycling on flat terrain where there is no need to walk. Road bike pedals are single-sided and you must find the correct side to clip into. Popular brands of road bike pedal and cleat systems include Look and Carnac systems.

Mountain Bike Pedals

Cleats for mountain bike pedals are also known as walkable cleats because the cleats are recessed into the shoe soles. This makes them ideal for mountain bikers who often need to walk or hike during the course of their ride. The pedals are often double-sided so you do not have to look down to snap into the system. Popular mountain bike clipless pedals include those manufactured by ATAC and Crank.

Benefits of Clipless Pedals

The pedal and cleat system of clipless bike pedals allows you to get greater efficiency from your pedaling. With regular bicycle pedals you can only push the pedal down. With the cleat system you also pull up on the pedal increasing your power efficiency. Clipless systems also allow you to snap into the bicycle without having to adjust any straps.
