A triathlon is a three-part race that requires participants to bike, run and swim on certain distance, depending on the event. California hosts several different triathlon events throughout the year that are open to the public or qualifying participants. Triathlon events in California range from beginner level to professional athlete. So, whether you are new to this type of competition or are have some experience under your belt, you are sure to find a triathlon event in California that fits your level of fitness and experience.

Avia Wildflower Triathlon

The Avia Wildflower Triathlon festival is hosted every year at Lake San Antonio in Bradley, California. The festival includes three different events that you can choose to compete in: Long Course Triathlon, Olympic Distance Triathlon, and Mountain Bike Triathlon. The Long Course event is composed of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run. The Olympic Distance Triathlon is a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike and 10 kilometer run. The last day of the festival is the Mountain Bike Triathlon, which includes a .25-mile swim, 9.7-mile bike and 2-mile run. Avia Wildflower events are open to men and women of all ages-adults, youth and challenged athletes. In addition, the Long Course Triathlon was selected by USA Triathlon as a qualifier event for the IUT World Long Course Triathlon Championships for 2011.

Rohto Ironman 70.3

The Rohto Ironman 70.3 is a half ironman event hosted in Oceanside, California at the Oceanside Harbor. The course includes a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. All participants must be at least 18 years of age on the day of the race to participate. The swim course of the event will be in the calm waters of the Oceanside Harbor, while the bike trail will be along the coast of San Clemente State Park and Camp Pendleton. The race will finish off with a run through the neighborhoods on the coast of Oceanside.

UCSD TritonMan Triathlon

The UCSD TritonMan Triathlon event is held at Fiesta Island in San Diego, California. The race course includes a 500-yard swim, 12-mile bike and 5K run. The swim will be started in wavy open waters, while the bike leg is completely flat. The last leg of the race will be run in a counter clockwise direction around the perimeter of the island. This event is hosted by student-athletes whose goal is to encourage sustainability in sports by making a positive environmental impact and going green.

Napa Valley Sprint Triathlon

The Napa Valley Sprint Triathlon is held every year at Lake Berryessa in Napa Valley, California. This race is geared toward beginners and experienced athletes. The sprint course includes 1/-mile swim, 11-mile rolling-hill bike ride and 3-mile rolling-hill run. This event is open to individuals and relay teams at different ages, as well as disabled athletes.
