Your doctor can measure your heart rhythm through a machine called an electrocardiogram or ECG. An ECG printout of your heart rhythm may show an irregular heartbeat, instead of a consistent beat, and this irregularity is considered variable. This variability may be brought on by a physical limitation or emotional distress; for example, thoughts of financial troubles may make your heart rate increase. One way to reduce this variability is through meditation that uses breath control. As you inhale, your heart rate decreases, and as you exhale it increases. The goal with meditation is to keep your breathing consistent to help regulate your heartbeat.

Step 1

Sit or lie face up in a comfortable, quiet area.

Step 2

Close your eyes and begin to consciously breathe in and out through your nose.

Step 3

Focus your thoughts on your breathing, and if your mind begins to wander, return your focus to your breath.

Step 4

Relax your body into the ground and release any tightened muscles.

Step 5

Silently count to five as you inhale through your nose and to five as you exhale through your nose. Repeat for five to 10 complete breath cycles.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can use this breathing meditation anytime throughout the day for stress release and heart rate control.
  • Please speak with your doctor, as this is an alternative health option and should not replace medical care.
