In her book "Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide," Pamela Miles writes that Reiki is an energetic healing practice that may provide balance in every part of a human being. A Reiki treatment is made up of light touches on different centers of the body, where a practitioner is said to allow the universal life force to flow through the hands. Kundalini is purportedly a dormant energy within that can be awakened through various practices. Kundalini Reiki focuses on awakening that energy source within the body through a healing session. This process has not been proven scientifically.
History of Reiki
Miles writes that the history of Reiki dates to the 1800s in Japan, where a man named Mikao Usui first discovered it through profound meditations. He went on a fasting retreat to Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain. He felt healing vibrations within and around his body and understood that he could help others to heal. He practiced on his family and friends with successful results, and from there decided to share it publicly. Usui referred to his practice as the "secret of happiness," where it's understood that spiritual well-being is the secret to health.
Kundalini Awoken
Ravindra Kumar writes in his book "Kundalini for Beginners" that when Kundalini awakens, it rises from the base of the spine, of the shoshumna, or central channel of the body near the spine, to the top of the head. When Kundalini is awoken, thoughts can change to the universal aspect of life as one. It's said to be a deeply spiritual experience. All cells in the body are said to feel charged, sparking a complete rejuvenation.
Treatment
There are many certified Reiki practitioners throughout the world. Each practitioner may have a different style of treatment. Miles writes that a client lies flat on this back, fully clothed on a massage table. The Reiki practitioner places his hands on different parts of the body in a gentle fashion. This usually starts at the top of the head and varying parts of the torso. Each hand position is placed for several minutes until the practitioner feels the treatment for that area is complete. A Kundalini Reiki treatment focuses on awakening the energy within the body. Hands may be placed on the bottom of the spine or the top of the head. A Reiki treatment is a non-evasive and gentle session that is not meant to feel unsafe or inappropriate.
Training
Miles writes that you can become a certified Reiki practitioner by going through three levels of training: first-degree, second-degree and then becoming a Reiki master. Going through the training can be a healing experience for students, who frequently get to work on their own bodies. Specific hand positions and techniques are taught in each level, advancing as the student progresses through the training.
