After long johns or leggings plus an insulating layer, ski pants are typically the last layer you put on before heading out to the slopes. Your ski pants must be large enough to cover the other layers comfortably. They should protect you against the elements, and come equipped with enough zippered pockets to stash important items. Many ski pants also provide extra protection and durable fabric in case of falls. Research these factors, then choose the right style and color ski pants for you.

FlyLow Stash Freeride Pants

"Powder" magazine rates FlyLow's Stash Freeride Pants highly for durability -- and they fit both men and women. The pants come in bright blue or gray, and are made of a 100 percent dobby nylon fabric. The nylon is tightly woven to keep water out. The pants remain breathable after your body has warmed up on a longer run, thanks to vents on the inner and outer thighs. With plenty of deep cargo pockets to hold needed items, you can stash a snack or an extra pair of gloves.

Spyder Dare Pants

Galt Tech, a product review website, calls Spyder Dare Pants the best men's shell ski pants. They feature removable suspenders designed to prevent them from falling down on the slopes. The knees also are made to be slightly roomier for active skiers who need to make quick cuts and turns. The pants feature zippers on the lower legs for easier access to your boots, and the seams are sealed to protect against water. Galt Tech likes them because they are waterproof and water repellent, yet breathable.

Oakley Gretchen Bleiler Profile Lite Pants

"Skiing" magazine ranks the Oakley Gretchen Bleiler Profile Lite Pants highly for the female skier. The silicone sticky waistband is designed to keep your shirt in place. Inner-thigh vents provide breathability, and there are plenty of pockets. Because the insulation is lighter, these are the ideal pants to wear if you get too warm when you ski.

North Face Youth Insulated Freedom Pant

Galt Tech recommends the North Face Youth Insulated Freedom Pant for the younger skiers in your family. These pants are versatile, as they're built for skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing. The adjustable waistband lets the pants grow with your child. Waterproofing and insulation ensure protection against the elements.
