Hot flashes are a symptom commonly experienced by women who are approaching menopause. The sudden rush of heat, often accompanied by sweating and increased heartbeat, is caused by the body's reaction to rapid hormonal fluctuations. In response to a perceived need to increase temperature, your body dilates the blood vessels, causing a flushing sensation that can occur unpredictably. Fortunately, natural approaches can help decrease or eliminate hot flashes. Soy products are one of the substances used to treat this troublesome symptom. Speak with your doctor before using any approach to treating hot flashes.

Step 1

Consume soy-based foods, such as soy cheese, tofu and tempeh. According to MayoClinic.com, women who eat soy frequently report the incidence of hot flashes less frequently than women who don't consume soy products. This may be attributed to the presence of isoflavones, which are estrogen-like substances in soy products. Women who have a higher risk of estrogen-dependent cancers, however, should not rely on soy products to treat any symptoms of menopause or should consult with their doctor before using soy products.

Step 2

Drink a glass of soy milk at least once a day. Soy milk is available in many different flavors and you can use it in cooking and baking as well. If you're not a fan of the flavor of soy milk, try mixing half a glass with half a glass of low-fat regular milk and gradually replace the regular milk with soy milk. Soy is a healthy source of dietary protein and amino acids, which can help rebuild tissues in the body. In addition, soy milk does not contain added hormones that may be found in regular milk and could contribute to hormonal fluctuations that lead to hot flashes.

Step 3

Snack on flavored soybeans, available at your local health food store. Soybeans are generally dry roasted and flavored with herbs and spices, such as chili powder, garlic and dill. If you are sensitive to the effects of salt, however, choose dry roasted soybeans that don't contain added salt or have no flavor added. Soybeans by themselves have a mild natural flavor reminiscent of peanuts and you may enjoy plain soybeans as a healthy, low-fat snack. You'll also be getting plenty of isoflavones, which may help relieve your hot flashes and other symptoms.

Step 4

Take soy daily in capsule form that contains 40 to 120 mg of isoflavones, available at your local health food store. Taking soy in capsule form may be an easier way to get the benefits of soy without making significant changes to your grocery list. According to MayoClinic.com, research has shown that women who take a soy supplement daily also experience a reduction in overall cholesterol and LDL or "bad" cholesterol. As you approach menopause, your risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease increases. Taking a soy supplement may help reduce this risk and help reduce the incidence of hot flashes.
