Aqua aerobics is a beneficial way for you to gain cardiovascular endurance, burn calories and lose weight. Having an aqua aerobics regimen is healthy for those with injuries, seniors and those recovering from certain illnesses. Many gyms and fitness centers are employing certified aqua aerobics instructors to lead a variety of classes. Getting your aqua aerobics certification can be a long process, but you can pace your studies to your own schedule.

Time Frame

According to the Aquatic Exercise Association's website, the general time frame for acquiring your aqua aerobics certification begins about eight months prior to the examination. This includes an 8-to-12 week time frame for your self-study in addition to six months of in-water training. The AEA exam draws from information you will study through textbooks, DVDs and your experience with other AEA certified instructors during your in-water practices.

Features

The aqua aerobics certification examination is based on information you will learn in the AEA Aquatics Fitness Professional Manual. It covers areas like choreography, participant safety, resistance and cueing. The examination also includes exercise anatomy and physiology-applied anatomy, aquatic fitness equipment, deep-water exercise, leadership and physical fitness.

Cost

Normally the cost for taking the AEA Certification examination is $145. This does not include the cost of textbooks. According to the AEA website, for members of the AEA, the Aquatic Fitness Professional Manual costs $48 plus shipping; AFP Practical Skill and Applications course is $65; Human Kinetics AEA Certification Online Prep Course is $112; and the Manual plus the online prep course costs $152. Non-members occur slightly more expensive costs; these prices are valid and current as of January 2011.

Considerations

Like any fitness certification, there are considerations you should understand before committing your time, energy and money. Aqua aerobics is a type of exercise not offered at all fitness centers and is limited to those with swimming pools only. Before registering for your aqua aerobics certification, it is important to research facilities in your area that offer aqua aerobics. Checking with your own doctor is important, so you ensure you are physically and mentally equipped to become a certified aqua aerobics instructor.

Benefits

The benefits of becoming an aqua aerobics instructor includes offering a type of exercise that allows many demographics to become more healthy. According to the textbook "Aqua Fitness," by John Mason, practicing aqua aerobics tones muscles, increase flexibility, improves balance and posture, reduces impact on the joints and decreases stress placed on the joints, and better circulation due to water pressure.
