Psoriasis is a common skin condition. It is a chronic, or long-lasting, disease in which cells accumulate on the surface of the skin creating red and itchy patches and silvery scales. Natural methods may help treat this condition. Talk with your physician about your treatment options, including herbs. Your doctor can tell you what herbs may be appropriate for you and your condition.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, or a condition in which your body's T cells attack your healthy skin cells as though they are trying to fight an infection. There are many potential triggers for psoriasis, including stress, cold temperatures, smoking, alcohol abuse, certain medications, injury and infection. The most commonly seen signs and symptoms of psoriasis include cracked skin, itching, red patches of skin, thickened skin and stiff and swollen joints. Anxiety and depression are two common complications associated with psoriasis.
Herbal Approach
According to Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Natural Healing," there is no known cure for psoriasis. Treatment, including herbal treatments, are aimed at reducing the symptoms of this condition. Balch states that the following herbs have been helpful in treating psoriasis: burdock root, ginger, dandelion, goldenseal, lavender, sarsaparilla, milk thistle and wild pansy. Some of these herbs are taken orally, some are applied topically, and others are used in bathwater to help treat psoriasis.
A Popular Herb
Sarsaparilla is a popular herb in the treatment of psoriasis. The University of Michigan Health System states that sarsaparilla has been used by herbalists to treat many conditions, including skin diseases, cancer and rheumatism. Sarsaparilla acts as a general blood cleanser and a detoxifier of your kidneys and skin. Sarsaparilla, which is rich in phytosterols, possesses anti-inflammatory action and is used to treat chronic skin problems such as psoriasis, acne and eczema. Sarsaparilla may also help prevent kidney stone formation.
Warning
Herbs contain substances that can cause significant effects within your body. You should always exercise caution when using herbs to treat your health problems. Some herbs are not appropriate for certain people and may cause unwanted side effects if taken inappropriately. Meet with your doctor to discuss all aspects of herbal treatments, including the herbs you should take, proper dosage, duration of treatment, risks and side effects, and possible drug interactions.
