Ball control and creativity are two skills of soccer that can make you a better player. It's easy to practice any move you would use in a game situation on your own. All you need is a ball and an open area in which to practice. You can run your own drills and add variations to the tricks to make them more effective.

Pull-and-Push Skill

The pull-and-push soccer move is a common maneuver often used during games to get away from or around a defender. Dribble the ball until a defender obstructs you and causes you to stop. To execute the move, place the sole of your foot on top of the ball and pull it back toward you. Then, in one smooth transition, push the ball with the outside of that same foot into your desired direction. If you use your right foot, you must go right. If you use your left foot, you must go left. Accelerate quickly once you begin to move forward to separate yourself from the defender.

Breakaway Skill

Composure and control are two important skills every soccer player must possess. This may apply even more for forwards and attacking players. In a breakaway situation, when you face only the opposing goalkeeper, making smart decisions is key. Instead of powering a shot toward goal, concentrate on making a well-placed shot to beat the goalkeeper. An accurate kick toward a corner of the goal, or a well-timed tap between the goalkeeper's legs are typically more effective than any power shot from such short distances. Mind the angle at which you're standing in relation to the goal to help you make the decision on which type of shot to make.

The Adriano Trick

The Adriano is a quick-footed soccer trick that consists of three movements. As a defender approaches you, place your dominant foot on top of the ball and pull it back as you hop forward with the other leg. In the second movement, tap the ball with the inside of your dominant foot to the outside and behind the other foot. Finally, move forward to retrieve the ball and and pull away from the defender. Execute the movements seamlessly and smoothly. Practice the trick with both feet.

Toe Flick Trick

This trick is designed to confuse your opponent to help you move around him. As you are dribbling and a defender approaches, place your right foot on top of the ball and spin it quickly inward, popping it against the inside of your left foot. The ball should jump slightly into the air. Once in the air, flick the ball with your right foot up and forward, past the defender. The objective is to get the defender to commit forward as you snap the ball against your left foot. Once he does so, you can flick the ball forward and move past him.
