Hawthorn, also known as mayflower, is a tree native to North America and temperate areas of Europe. This tree produces small, dark red berries that are commonly used in herbal medicine. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that wearing hawthorn blossoms could enhance fertility. Although this herb cannot increase your chances of conceiving a child, it may offer several other health benefits. Check with your doctor before using hawthorn to treat any illness or condition.

Arteriosclerosis

The chemical compounds in hawthorn berries may help reduce the effects of arteriosclerosis. They may help dilate arteries and blood vessels, improving the flow of blood through your circulatory system. Hawthorn may also help clear lipid deposits from the walls of your arteries that can contribute to arteriosclerosis. However, current research linking hawthorn to arteriosclerosis management is not conclusive.

Memory and Cognition

Hawthorn may help improve mental cognition, including short-term and long-term memory. It may improve the delivery of oxygen to your brain by enhancing blood circulation to your brain's blood vessels. It may also improve the absorption and use of B-vitamins, which are necessary for mental function and memory.

Stress Reduction

Hawthorn berries are rich sources of several B vitamins, including thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, cobalamin and pyridoxine. These vitamins are involved in promoting a healthy nervous system, which may help reduce stress and anxiety. Cobalamin aids the production of myelin, a substance that shields nerve endings against toxic damage. Pyridoxine is an anti-stress vitamin that can help promote feelings of calmness. Niacin may improve absorption of carbohydrates and proteins, which your body needs to repair nerve cells.

Immune System Enhancement

In addition to other nutrients, hawthorn berries are rich sources of vitamin C. This vitamin is a natural immune system enhancer. It may help your body ward off influenza, colds and bacterial infections, particularly during times of stress.
