Flex Belt Comparisons

The Slendertone Flex Belt is a device that uses electrical muscle stimulation technology to give you toned abs. While wearing the belt, an electric impulse is sent through the skin to cause the muscles to contract. Even though the Flex Belt will create muscle, it does not help to remove fat from the body. For optimal results when using an electrical muscle stimulation device, you need to participate in regular exercise and follow a calorie controlled diet.

FDA Clearance

When comparing the Flex Belt to other devices, you should check for FDA clearance on the product. Contour Abs and AbSonic are two other types of electrical muscle stimulation belts sold through infomercials and online websites. Neither of these belts has yet to receive clearance. The Flex Belt is approved by the FDA for toning, strengthening and firming the abs.

Clinical Trials

Studies have been done on the Flex Belt to determine whether it is effective at working the muscles. According to a 2005 study printed in the "Journal of Sports Science and Medicine," the device significantly increased ab strength and endurance while decreasing girth and toning the area. Contour Abs and AbSonic have not gone through clinical trials to determine effectiveness.

Ab Exercisers

The manufacturer also makes comparisons to the Gold's Gym Ab Bench, Cross Crunch, Best Fitness Ab Board, Abs of Steel, AbCoaster and many more on their website. According to the manufacturer, the Flex Belt is more effective than most abdominal exercisers available on the market. It backs this claim by stating that it has FDA approval for the device and you do not need to perform difficult exercises for results.

Warning

Keep in mind that all ab electrical muscle stimulation devices carry the same type of risks. Side effects include shocks, burns, skin irritation and pain. If you are pregnant or have recently given birth, you should not use an electrical muscle stimulation product. Avoid the devices if you have a Pacemaker or defibrillator implanted.
