Hiatal hernias occur when your stomach pushes up through your diaphragm, causing acid reflux and other symptoms. When suffering a hiatal hernia, the question of safe exercise is always at the forefront. Exercises that place pressure on the abdominal muscles can aggravate and worsen a hiatal hernia. Cyclists especially worry about this as pressure from pedaling and the seat are constant.

Adaptive Clothing

Cycling shorts are popular during warm-weather riding because they are made of nylon and other stretchable materials that allow skin to breathe. When suffering a hiatal hernia, cycling shorts with extra padding in the crotch and legs will protect you from pressure of the bicycle seat. Any pressure that pushes up on your abdomen will create discomfort, increasing acid reflux from your hernia.

Bicycle

When choosing a bicycle to use when suffering a hiatal hernia, framework is important. Bicycles that require you to bend forward or stoop are dangerous for your abdomen, applying additional pressure to your hiatal hernia, according to Tom Smith, author of " Positive Options for Hiatus Hernia: Self-Help and Treatment." Smith suggests avoiding any movement that would require you to bend in any way until your hiatal hernia has healed. Bicycles with a higher handlebar grip and pedal are better suited to the physical requirements your doctor will place on you.

Seating

Bicycle seating is also a feature that requires close attention. Seats that are narrow and more curved increase pressure on your abdominal muscles as you attempt to maintain proper seating position and balance. This additional abdominal pressure pushes acids up through your esophagus, causing increased reflux, according to Med Help. Choosing a seat that has a flatter, broader base will help eliminate additional pressure while supporting your backside and abdomen.

Considerations

Due to the dangers of hiatal hernia complications, it is important to discuss your physical activity practice with your doctor. Some cases of hiatal hernia make it impossible to participate in cycling, though it generally is a safe exercise. When participating in cycling, remember to follow safe practices by wearing a helmet and avoiding tight-fitting clothing.
