Bicycling on a trail or through mountains appeals to weekend cyclists and daredevils. The environment and the rough terrain can make for interesting and challenging rides. But all cyclists benefit from having the right saddle, which can add comfort and fun to the ride.
Know Your Perineum
Saddles have come a long way since the 1990s, when experts determined that uncomfortable saddles could cause damage to the perineum. Your perineum is located between the two bones that take all the pressure and make contact when you sit. It's the junction for nerves and arteries that make many lower-body functions possible. Too much pressure on that area, and riders can suffer everything from pain, to numbness, to impotence.
Know Your Saddles
Saddles come in different shapes and sizes, from narrow saddles for high performance, to 12-inch wide saddles for comfort. Most saddles have channels down the center, with extra padding beneath the sit bones. For extra relief on the groin area, you can find saddles that are noseless, horseshoe-shaped and even dual padded, with one small seat for each sit bone. Also, consider the saddle fillings, whether air or gel.
The Right Fit
No one has the same bone structure, so individuals need different saddles. To find one that's right for you, test it. It's not enough to sit on the saddle in the store. Take the saddle -- or one like it-- for a ride. Many stores will allow a test drive. Also, remember that tilt is important. Most saddles are parallel to the ground. You may find a slight tilt forward more comfortable.
Remember Your Needs
Think about what you need from the saddle. High-flying mountain bike rides require you to stand frequently and use your legs for shock absorption, so a smaller, narrower seat with padding only where it's needed will allow for a more aggressive ride. A pleasant ride on a smooth dirt path or back road may mean you're in for more sitting, so you'll want the cushy comfort of a wide saddle with springs. Whichever you choose, remember that there's no break-in period for a new saddle. If it's uncomfortable weeks after your bought it, take it back.
