The kidneys are responsible for removing and filtering wastes, stimulating the bone marrow to produce blood cells, regulating blood pressure and converting vitamin D to its active form. If you are in mild or moderate kidney failure, consult your nephrologist for a diet more specific to your condition. Certain foods may be helpful to improve the function of your kidneys.

Red Bell Peppers

Red bell peppers are a healthy addition to any diet and may help improve kidney function. According to DaVita.com, a leading provider of kidney care and dialysis supplies in the United States, red bell peppers are low in potassium and high in flavor, but that's not the only reason they're perfect for the renal diet as they are also a healthy source of vitamins C and A. Some patients with renal insufficiency may be instructed by their doctor to lower their daily intake of potassium, as potassium can be taxing on the kidneys. Red peppers are a good choice for a low-potassium vegetable. Vitamins C and A are antioxidants that help rid the body of free radicals and inflammation, thus making the body more resistant to illness and disease. Red bell peppers can be eaten raw in a salad or added to soups or stews. They can also be sauteed in pasta and stir-fry dishes.

Cabbage

Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable that may help improve kidney function and your overall health. Cabbage contains powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals, nutrients that help protect the body from environmental hazards, pollutants and toxins. Cabbage is high in vitamins K, C and B6, as well as fiber and folic acid. It is also low cost, making it an affordable addition to the kidney diet. Cabbage can be eaten raw in salads and coleslaw or used in soups and stews.

Berries

Berries are a delicious way to help improve kidney function. Cranberries, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries all pack a powerful dose of antioxidant vitamins and phytonutrients, which help protect the body from inflammation. These fruits are low in sodium and contain both potassium and phosphorus. They can be eaten plain, with yogurt, in a smoothie or incorporated into baked goods, such as muffins and scones.
