Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women, and for American women, it is the second-most-commonly diagnosed cancer, the Mayo Clinic reported in 2009, after skin cancer. Many factors have been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Frequent physical activity is one such factor; duathlons --- sporting events involving running and cycling --- are a physical activity that may help prevent breast cancer.
Causes of Breast Cancer
The causes of breast cancer are not, as of 2010, clear to medical science. But excessive alcohol consumption, hormonal problems, genetic factors, obesity, radiation and increasing age have all been identified as risk factors.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Breast cancer is diagnosed through a variety of tests. These tests include mammograms (breast X-ray), MRI, ultrasound and biopsy. Breast cancer is treated using a combination of methods. Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and hormonal treatments all may be included in a breast-cancer treatment program.
Duathlon
Duathlons are endurance events that combine running and biking. The distance of duathlons vary according to the event. A typical duathlon is divided into three parts, the Racing Underground website explains: a cycling portion sandwiched between running portions. As such, the event provides a considerable cardiovascular and aerobic workout.
Breast Cancer and Duathlons
Exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, women who exercise a few hours a week have a better breast cancer survival rate. Regular exercises such as biking and running have also been proven to reduce the recurrence of cancer in women.
Warnings
Discuss your breast cancer risks with your doctor, and schedule a visit immediately if you experience any unusual changes in your breasts, such as a lump. You should also consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise regimen, including training for a duathlon.
