For avid skaters or those who skate professionally, choosing the right inline speed skate is very important. Skaters can customize their skate sets or choose from pre-packaged skates. Cost and fit are two of the biggest factors in deciding on an inline speed skate. Stock inline speed skates provide skaters with a reasonably affordable item and the ability to customize their skates.

Price

Stock inline speed skates have become reasonably priced. Prior to 2009, a custom-made inline speed skate set cost an average of $900 to $1,4000. As of January 2011, you can purchase stock inline speed skates at a price range of $275 to $750.

Sets

When purchasing a stock inline speed skate, you receive the boots, frame -- the portion of the skate that secures the wheels -- wheels ,spacers and bearings. These items are included in your purchase price and instructions are provided as to how to set the skate up. The inline frame is generally one inch in thickness. The length of the frame is measured from the center point to the front axle and the center point to the rear axle. There are four wheels in a set. This increases the roll of the skate.

Molding

Stock inline skates can be molded by the use of heat. Molding your skates helps to cut down on portions of the skate that create discomfort in your foot and ankle. You can use a heat gun or an oven heated to 200 degrees. After heating the skate for 10 minutes, place the skate on your foot. Lace and secure the boot to your foot as if you were going skating. When the boot cools, it will mold to your foot to make a more customized fit.

Resale

After molding your boot, there is a slim chance you'll be able to resell your skates. Since the mold fits your foot, it is highly unlikely that another person will be comfortable in your skates. If you think you might want to sell our skates, do not heat mold them to your feet.
