Lower Back Muscle Treatment

Lower back pain affects most people at some point in their lives. The degree of severity ranges based on the cause of the pain. Some commons reasons for back injury include lifting heavy objects, falls, excessive strain while exercising and other sports injuries. Try several treatments to help this problem.

Rest

Giving your lower back rest is one of the first things you should do if you experience pain. This is necessary to allow the healing process to begin. Once you feel the lower back start to throb, you should remain off your feet for at least one day. Once movement becomes less strained, it is alright to gradually walk again.

NSAIDs

Take nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, to alleviate lower back pain. These decrease swelling around the muscles and joints and should be taken within one to two days after you experience lower back strain. Aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen are effective over-the-counter NSAID pain relievers.

Ice

Ice is one remedy to place on your lower back while you are resting. According to the University Sports Medicine at the University of Buffalo, ice packs should be used for half an hour every four hours during the time swelling is present.

Heat

Heat can be used once your pain has subsided. Try heating pads, microwaveable hot packs or warm baths to ease stiffness. Apply them for 30-minute intervals until your lower back muscles feel normal again.

Consult Your Doctor

If these basic muscle treatments do not suffice, you should consult your doctor for further advice. He or she may prescribe medications like muscle relaxants or recommend surgery if your back pain is severe.
