Elliptical trainers are some of the most expensive cardio machines on the market. Machines under $2,000 are considered mid-range and around $1,000 is a deal for home use. There are decent low-cost ellipticals you can purchase for your home gym. These elliptical trainers are machines with pedals that move along an elliptical path and arms that move forward and backward to work the upper body.

ProForm 900 Cardio Cross Elliptical Trainer

The ProForm 900 Cardio Cross elliptical trainer is an inexpensive machine recommended by Galt Technologies. The ProForm 900 Cardio Cross comes with five pedal settings and is a smaller, compact model that fits more easily in your home. It weighs around 100 lbs. for easy moving. This model is gentle on the joints using what ProForm calls reflex step technology. This elliptical costs around $379.

Schwinn 420

Schwinn 420 is a basic elliptical trainer that you can find for as low as $597. Consumer Search named the Schwinn 420 as its best basic elliptical trainer. Unlike some low-cost models, the Schwinn 420 is durable and won't wobble or make noises as long as you keep up with cleaning and maintenance. This machine offers 16 resistance levels and 12 workout programs. You also get heart-rate monitor sensors in the handgrips and it has a fixed stride length of 18 inches.

NordicTrack E5Vi Elliptical

The NordicTrack E5Vi costs around the same as the Schwinn 420. It was listed as a runner up of best elliptical trainers from Consumer Search, but this review included many pricier machines. This elliptical machine has an adjustable stride so you can choose 13 inches, 15 inches or 18 inches for superior comfort depending on your stride length. The E5Vi has 12 resistance levels and 16 preset programs.

Horizon EX-57 Elliptical

The EX-57 from Horizon Fitness Horizon Fitness ranks as one of the best elliptical trainers in 2010 by Galt Technologies. Although Horizon is not as well-known as ProForm, Schwinn and NordicTrack, Galt calls their machines rugged and reliable. This machine has eight resistance levels, nine programs and pivoting foot plates. It uses quiet magnetic brake resistance and a 14-lb. flywheel for smooth strides. The stride length is fixed at 18 inches. The EX-57 Elliptical Trainer it costs around $600, putting it in the same price range as the NordicTrack and Schwinn trainers.
