Air flow golf balls are plastic golf balls with small holes covering the surface. The holes help create drag and reduce backspin, so the balls can't fly as far. The holes are directly opposite from one another to maximize the drag and limit distance.

Advantages

Air flow golf balls can be used for practice in almost any setting because they don't fly far and are covered with thin plastic. They can be used in the backyard or even indoors with some extra precautions to make sure that players swinging clubs and smacking these practice golf balls won't do any harm.

Disadvantages

Air flow golf balls are made from a thin, lightweight plastic that makes them vulnerable to breaking and cracking. Because they are so light, a good wind can carry them farther than you would like, perhaps to areas where they can't be retrieved. Practicing with them also won't recreate exactly the feel of hitting traditional golf balls on the course.

Price

Air flow golf balls are very reasonable in price. You can find them for as little as $4 for 12 through online deals and at sales at department and sporting goods stores. You also can get chipping nets and other gear to use if you set up in your backyard or an empty field.

Practice with Purpose

When you practice with air flow golf balls -- or the real thing, for that matter -- focus on something you know needs improvement, rather than just hitting practice balls with no real intent. Maybe your grip feels off or your backswing doesn't seem balanced. Toss some air flow balls into the backyard and work on improving your grip, swing, stance or whatever part of your game needs attention.
