When the muscles in your intestinal system contract faster or slower than normal, you may be experiencing irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. This can lead to abdominal cramping and pain, constipation or diarrhea or both, gas, bloating, pain relief after bowel movements, and mucus in your stool. Eating a nutrient-rich, healthy diet is important when you have IBS. Specifically, certain fruits may help reduce or manage IBS symptoms.
Fresh Fruits High In Fiber
Apples and peaches are two specific fruits that are sources of fiber, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Fiber may reduce IBS-related constipation because it helps make your stool soft and therefore easier to void. They caution, however, that some people may be more sensitive to fiber-rich foods and may experience increased abdominal discomfort. You can add fiber-rich fruits, like apples and peaches, to your diet at a gradual pace and monitor your symptoms to find what works for you.
Dried Fruits
Dried fruits are a good source of fiber, which may help relieve symptoms of IBS, such as constipation. In addition, the fiber in dried fruits may help improve your digestion and absorption of important nutrients. Just 1/2 cup of prunes contains 3.8 g of fiber per day, according to FamilyDoctor.org. Other good sources of dried fruits include figs and dates, raisins and apricots.
Other Fruits
Other good fiber-filled fruits that may help relieve your symptoms of IBS are papayas, mangoes, oranges, nectarines, kiwis, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Many of these fruits can be added to salads, cereal bowls and yogurt bowls. You can also eat them fresh as part of a healthy snack.
