Herpes simplex is a virus that manifests orally and genitally, causing fever blisters or cold sores. It is highly contagious and transmitted through both oral and genital contact and is considered incurable. Homeopathy stimulates the body to heal itself by triggering a response to a disease, activating the body's natural healing. Although homeopathy may not cure herpes, anecdotal reports from patients and practitioners indicate that the correct remedy may reduce symptoms or put the virus into remission.

Symptoms

Depending on whether the herpes outbreak is your first or happens recurrently, the intensity of symptoms may vary. The first outbreak is usually the worst, with recurrent outbreaks being mild or producing no symptoms at all. Regardless of whether symptoms appear or not, the virus is still highly contagious and transmissible. Primary symptoms in both genital and oral herpes include a tingling sensation followed by an outbreak of fluid-filled blisters that later dry to a crust and cause itching and stinging. There may be discharge from sexual organs and difficulty urinating in both sexes. Oral herpes may produce bad breath, increased salivation, difficult swallowing, and associated muscle pain in some people.

Rhus toxicodendron

Rhus toxicodendron, or Rhus tox, is a common homeopathic remedy that may help reduce symptoms of herpes during an acute outbreak. It is indicated in cases where blisters form accompanied by intense itching. Scratching often makes the itching worse and increases the spread of the virus. The person needing Rhus tox may feel very restless and need to move from one position to another frequently. The tongue may be coated white with a bright red tip that looks like a strawberry. Rhus tox may be used for both genital and oral herpes in both sexes.

Mercurius

Mercurius may be needed by people during an acute outbreak whose symptoms cause severe pain with accompanied swollen glands and burning sensations. Blisters may appear in large areas inside the mouth or on the genitals. In oral herpes cases, the person may drool heavily, wetting the pillow at night. Mercurius is indicated when there is great thirst accompanied by much perspiration during an outbreak.

Other Considerations

There are many homeopathic remedies that can be prescribed to treat herpes either for acute attacks or chronic recurrences. These include Sepia, Natrum Muriaticum and Herpes simplex nosode, to name several. If you choose a homeopathic treatment for this condition, it is recommended that you find a qualified homeopathic practitioner for your treatment. You should not self-treat if you suffer from herpes. Many homeopathic remedies are available over the counter in health food stores and from online pharmacies. Ask your practitioner for dosing guidelines and always schedule follow-up visits to ascertain the effectiveness of the remedy prescribed.
