You can use the turkey recommended in the South Beach Diet for all three phases of the weight loss plan. This low-carb diet focuses on lean, protein-rich meat as well as nuts, some low-glycemic index whole grains and vegetables. The turkey bacon is included in many recommended South Beach dishes such as kale and turkey bacon gratin.
Basic Nutrition
If you follow the South Beach-recommended bacon, you'll take in 35 calories per 14g serving. You'll get about 2g protein, 0.24g carbohydrate and 2.8g fat. The serving has 170mg sodium, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Comparison to Regular Bacon
Comparatively, regular bacon has about 75 calories for a 14g serving, which is more than double the number in the South Beach bacon. Regular bacon also roughly doubles the amount of fat. A 14g serving has 5.8g fat. The regular bacon has about 324mg sodium and about 5g protein.
Fat Considerations
While less caloric than regular bacon, most of the calories in this turkey bacon still come from fat. In fact, 25 of the 35 calories are fat calories. About 1g of this is saturated fat. The American Heart Association recommends you get no more than 7 percent of total daily calories from saturated fat. Based on a 2,000 calorie diet, a serving of South Beach Diet-approved bacon provides 5 percent of the daily recommended limit. Regular bacon has double the saturated fat per serving -- about 2g.
