Glutinous rice, also known as sticky rice or kao niow, is a popular form of rice across Asia. This rice is similar to traditional rice, but requires less water to grow and tends to clump up in sticky balls.

Calorie Content

Glutinous rice can be low in calories when consumed in small portions. A 1/2 cup serving of glutinous rice provides 160 calories. This amount comprises eight percent of the daily recommended intake of 2,000 calories, and has 10 calories more than a 1/2 cup of brown rice contains.

Fat Content

Glutinous rice does not contain any fat. However, cooking glutinous rice in butter or oil will add fat and calories to your rice.

Carbohydrate Content

Carbohydrates are the main calorie source in glutinous rice. Each 1/2 cup of this rice contains 35g of carbohydrates. None of these carbohydrates come from fiber or sugar.

Protein Content

Glutinous rice is low in protein, which is why it is often served with meat or seafood, as in sushi. Each 1/2 cup serving of glutinous rice provides 3g of protein. This amount is half of the amount found in one egg.

Vitamin and Mineral Content

Glutinous rice is not a rich source of vitamins or minerals. Each 1/2 cup serving provides less than two percent of the daily recommended intake of iron, but that is the vitamin or mineral provided in glutinous rice.
