Playing on a sport team offers a fun way for kids to learn team work, social skills and the healthy habit of exercising. Kids have the option of playing their favorite sports all year long with indoor leagues, including football. Indoor football leagues rules and regulations vary between states, leagues and even facilities.
Divisions
Indoor football leagues are typically split into divisions based on age. Divisions vary depended upon the league. The Arena youth football league in Washington state for example has a pee wee division for ages 7 to 8, a midget division for ages 9 to 10 and three other divisions for up to age 17.
Indoor Play
Kid indoor football leagues are played with traditional tackle football rules as well flag football rules. Each local league has its own rules for the game play, age categories, practices, registration fees, and uniforms. Some leagues such as the Game Time Sportz arena flag football have coed leagues.
Indoor Fields and Shoes
Indoor youth football playing fields vary by location and league. Maryland Youth Football has five facilities for playing. Each has different guidelines for what type of shoes to wear. Kids are asked not to wear metal cleats and to have a pair of tennis shoes as a backup in case the turf is not suitable for other foot gear. In many cases rubber sole cleats or plastic cleats are allowed. Turf shoes can be played on most surfaces.
Additional Information
Indoor seasons vary based on the league. Some indoor youth football leagues are designed to teach fundamentals of the sport in a fun environment. Other leagues such as the Maryland Youth Football indoor league are more competitive. They have a disclaimer that stresses the competitive nature of their league. They recommend that all players have at least one year experience playing before joining their indoor league.
