Holy basil has been used since ancient times in India as a medicinal herb to treat physical and spiritual disorders. Use of the herb is closely aligned with the traditions of Ayurvedic medicine and the Hindu religion. Stories told in the Hindu religion connect Vishnu and other gods to the herb. Consequently, holy basil is often grown in Indian homes, both in homage to religion and for convenient access to the herb for cooking and medicinal applications. Tulsi is an alternate name for holy basil; it also is called the "incomparable one," referring to its highly valued reputation and varied uses.

Blood Sugar Balance

Holy basil may reverse some effects of diabetes, including improving cases of diabetic retinopathy, according to a 2006 study published in the "Indian Journal of Clinical Biochemistry." The study's researchers, led by Dr. Halim Eshrat from the AII India Institute of Medical Sciences, induced rats with diabetic retinopathy and treated them for 16 weeks with holy basil extract, and the retinopathy improved. Diabetic retinopathy is a common symptom of diabetes that may cause blindness.

Fighting Aging

Holy basil may protect against the negative effects of aging, according to a 2008 study published in the "Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology." The study's researchers, led by Dr. Vaibhav Shinde from Poona College of Pharmacy, Maharashtra, India, found that holy basil may protect major organs, including the heart, liver and brain, against damage caused by free radicals. The study supports the herb's traditional reputation in Ayurvedic medicine as a longevity aid.

Adaptogenic Effects

Holy basil is best known for its adaptogenic effects. An adaptogen is a chemical substance that supports the body's naturally occurring responses to mental and physical stress. Consequently, many disorders that result from long-term stress may be prevented by using the herb at the first signs of imbalance. Tulsi may also bolster the immune system and help to treat illnesses with its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral effects, according to the "Yoga Journal."

Spirituality

Women in India often perform a daily ceremony with the holy basil plant that they think embodies the mother goddess. During the ceremony, they implore the goddess to open their hearts and minds, increase their life energy and improve their spiritual capabilities, including love, faith, commitment and understanding. The ceremony is thought to clear the worshipper's aura and to protect her during daily life, according to the "Yoga Journal."
