You are looking to get a bike that is the biggest bang for your buck. Cheap is a relative word but in this case: assume it means the least expensive bike that is the highest quality within those price limits. A cheap mountain bike bought brand new ranges in price from $112 to $500 as of 2011. It stands to reason that certain mechanical instruments, such as a bike and its parts, are expensive due to the craft and skill in the design and assembly.

Quality and Pricing

A great mountain bike is light and durable. You want something that can take the wear and tear of the sport for which is it was intended. More expensive bikes, in the $3,000 range, are made of materials that make the bike light and rugged. Patented brakes and gear systems also add to the greatness and expense of many bikes. Consider what, of these options, is important and eliminate what isn't from your criteria. This brings the price down.

Brands

Kawaski, Polaris and Schwinn all produce inexpensive, well-made mountain bikes. These bikes are for beginner and intermediate mountain bikers of all ages. Mongoose also makes great mountain bikes that are more expensive but still below average in price; about $375. Raleigh, Novara and Marin are brands of mountain bikes with excellent reputations and are available for under $480. These brands are available at a variety of retailers to include Walmart, REI, Target and many local bike shops.

Specific Example

The 2010 Novara Portal Bike, sold at REI, is the only 4-star rated mountain bike in the cheapest category: $300 to $499.99. This bike is an example of the best cheap mountain bike. Its features include suspension fork, responsive shifters, a light aluminum frame and tires that are great for trails and road riding. Its price is kept low because it is imported. Like many cheap mountain bikes, this bike is mostly recommended for casual trails as opposed to more advanced mountain biking trails.

Alternatives

One way to find the best and cheapest mountain bike is to consider a refurbished or used mountain bike. Many local bike shops offer a wide variety of used bikes. If you know what you are looking for and know pricing, you might also be successful getting more for your money through online sources such as eBay or Craigslist. Remember, however, that buying used or from a private seller leaves you with limited return or guarantee options.
