Eczema is a chronic skin condition consisting of thick, scaly patches of skin. More than 15 million Americans suffer from eczema, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Homeopathic remedies may offer relief from symptoms and help reduce the underlying inflammation. Homeopathic medicine works by triggering a reaction to an irritation or stimulus that allows the body's immune system to heal itself.

Symptoms

Eczema usually appears initially as patches of blisters that burst and crust over forming scales on the skin. The primary symptom experienced by most people is itching that comes and goes periodically. Conventional medicine claims there is no cure; however, certain natural treatments may greatly reduce the symptoms bringing relief. Other symptoms are dry, flaking skin; red, oozing blisters with raw areas that may be painful; dry, leathery patches of skin that are discolored either darker or lighter than the person's normal skin tone. Outbreaks tend to occur predominantly on the inside of knees and elbows.

Causes

The causes of eczema are unknown; however, a combination of heredity, allergies, environmental factors and vaccines are suspected, writes Maurice Shils in "Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease." In addition, exposure to irritants, sun and water may aggravate eczema. Stress and changes in temperature and humidity levels are also suspect.

Homeopathic Remedies

Various homeopathic remedies may be helpful in relieving symptoms of eczema, according to Dr. William Boericke in the "Materia Medica and Repertory." Sulfur is indicated for burning, intense itching, redness and skin that feels hot. The eczema may get worse after bathing or with scratching. Scratching may lead to additional itching in other areas. Sulfur may be especially helpful in cases where the person scratches until the skin bleeds, getting no relief.

Rhus toxicodendron may be indicated in cases where there are large patches of weeping blisters with extreme itching. It is often used after exposure to an irritating substance that may bring out the blisters. The individual may be extremely restless during an outbreak. Rhus toxidodendron should be helpful in cases where the itching is made better from warm applications or warm bathing.

Mezereum is often indicated when there is intolerable itching, accompanied by a feeling of chilliness. The eczema may be worse in bed at night. There may be ulcers and blisters surrounded by bright red discoloration and burning pains. There may be a thick layer of scabs under which a liquid discharge exudes. Mezereum is often indicated for eczema whose onset occurs after a reaction to vaccines.

Other Considerations

You should not self-treat if you or your child suffers from eczema. It is important to find a qualified homeopathic practitioner who can prescribe the correct remedy to suit your particular condition. Some homeopathic remedies are available over-the-counter in health food stores and online. Most practitioners can either supply remedies or point you in the direction of a good homeopathic pharmacy. Ask your homeopathic practitioner for dosing guidelines for your individual condition.
