Basketball Training Aids for Jump Shots

To consistently win basketball games, you must have the ability to score points. One of the most effective ways to score points is to have a productive jump shot. As a result, basketball players participate in numerous practice sessions and drills to improve jump shot ability. Training aids have even been developed as a way to improve jump shots and overall scoring ability.

Tools

Training aids are available for a wide range of shooting styles and weaknesses. Some training aids will attach to the hoop to increase concentration on certain areas of the rim while others stand freely on the court and force the player to shoot over a specific height or over an object. Another type of training aid attaches directly to the player like a sling to force him into the correct shooting mechanics.

Fundamentals

Using the training aids is designed to improve the overall fundamentals and mechanics of the jump shot. Focus on using proper fundamentals during every drill or shot with the training aid to increase the effectiveness of the aid. Basic fundamentals start with body position in relationship to the hoop and include having your feet 12 to 18 inches apart facing the hoop. Start every jump shot with the ball positioned in the center of your hand and between your eyes. Cock your hand back while keeping your elbows close to your body and use a proper follow-through with wrist action at the release.

Drills

According to Patrick Hickey Jr. from BballCentral.com, practicing every jump shot with drills and training aids is an essential component to improving jump shot performance. Perform a variety of drills using a coach or partner to pass the ball while performing as many high-quality jump shots as possible. Shoot from every position on the court at different angles to focus on proper body alignment and placement before, during and after each shot.

Considerations

Choose the training aid based on your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you are struggling to get maximum height during the jump shot, use a barrier as a training aid that forces a maximal jump for every shot. You can also complement the training aid drills with additional strength training and jump training to improve strength, power and agility on the court.
