Many medications come in pill form, ranging from such commonly used pain relievers as aspirin to prescription medications. For many people, swallowing a pill can be difficult and requires practice. You may be able to get around your problems with pill-swallowing by crushing pills before taking them. This can be problematic, however, as it can destroy any sustained-release mechanism the pill has or change how the medicine works.
Step 1
Practice with candy. Practice first with something small, such as Tic-Tacs. When you get comfortable with them, try a slightly larger candy, such as a Skittle.
Step 2
Place the candy in your mouth. Using your tongue, move the candy to the back of your mouth so that it is sitting on top of the back of your tongue.
Step 3
While taking a sip of water, tilt your head back and swallow. Use the liquid to propel the candy toward your throat.
Step 4
Once you are comfortable with swallowing candy, use the above process with your pills.
