Perimenopause is described as the transition from pre-menopause to menopause. Perimenopause affects women at different ages; however, women usually begin the transition in their 40's and for some, even sooner. Doctors may prescribe oral contraceptives or other medications to help symptoms of this condition; however, when used as an alternative treatment, certain herbs may help reduce the frequency of hot flashes and other symptoms. Speak with your doctor before using herbs to treat this condition.
Symptoms
Perimenopause may have similar symptoms as menopause such as hot flashes, irregular periods and vaginal dryness. In addition, other symptoms that may occur include mood changes such as irritability, anxiety and depression, decreased fertility due to irregular ovulation, changes in sexual desire, breast tenderness, loss of bone and changes in cholesterol levels. If you experience any symptoms that concern you, consult your physician for an evaluation.
Black Cohosh
Black cohosh has been used for more than two centuries to relieve menstrual cramps, mood swings, irritability, hot flashes and sleep disturbances. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a clinical study showed black cohosh to be more effective for treating symptoms such as hot flashes than Prozac. However, black cohosh should not be used for more than six months. The recommended dosage of black cohosh is between 40 and 80mg per day of standardized tablets containing 1mg of 27-deoxyactein.
Evening Primrose
Evening primrose has been used throughout history to treat respiratory infections and upset stomach. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, though evening primrose has become somewhat popular by women for treating symptoms such as hot flashes, studies have not confirmed or denied its effectiveness in treating them. The university suggests speaking with your health care provider to determine the appropriate dosage for perimenopausal symptoms.
St. John's Wort
St. John's wort has been used for many years for its medicinal properties. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, some studies show that when used in combination with black cohosh, St. John's wort may help alleviate anxiety and mood changes such as depression. The recommended dosage for mild depression and mood disorders is 300mg of dried herb in capsule or tablet form with meals three times per day.
