Pitching is the key aspect in playing winning baseball. A team that has several dependable pitchers will have confidence every time it steps onto the field. To assist pitchers in developing consistent effort, coaches can direct their pitchers in a conditioning program and work with them on their execution and game plan.
Arm Strength
Pitchers must work on their arm strength to stay healthy and keep from developing arm injuries. One of the best ways to build arm strength is to throw regularly and play long toss. Throw the ball every day -- even days when you are not planning to pitch. Start by throwing the ball from a distance of about 50 feet with your teammate. Gradually work your way back until you are throwing from a distance of about 150 feet. Use your legs to step, follow through and get full extension on your throws. This will help you develop strength in your rotator cuff, the muscles that support your shoulder. If you don't take care of your arm in this manner, arm and shoulder injuries are quite likely.
Pitching Game Plan
It's important for pitchers to develop all of their pitches and not just depend on one or two pitches. Even top power pitchers who can approach 100 miles per hour with their fastball can't get by on just one pitch. Changing speeds and locations with your pitches is the key to having a chance to win consistently. Having the physical talent to throw hard pitches is a great asset, but the pitcher's best asset is his mind and his ability to outthink the batter will help him be successful throughout his career.
Curveball
The curveball has become a forgotten pitch in baseball. Most pitchers have gone to the slider because it is easier to throw than the curveball. Pitchers who can learn how to throw a curveball effectively and figure out the proper time to throw it have an excellent chance of being successful. Developing arm strength by throwing frequently will help your develop an effective curveball that you can use when hitters are looking for the fastball.
Fielding The Position
One of the keys to becoming an effective pitcher is being able to field your position. The pitcher is the closest fielder to the batter and is involved in many plays. A great fielding pitcher will help the manager make a decision to let the pitcher stay in the game. Good fielding pitchers will help their teams play winning baseball.
