A well-stocked baby changing table can save you time and help prevent accidents. Thousands of babies are injured each year from falls off changing tables when they are left unattended for even a moment, according to Consumer Reports. Keeping everything needed for diaper changing, cleaning and dressing your baby within arm's reach helps minimize the risk of these potentially fatal injuries and makes changing time much more convenient.

Diapers

Since the changing table is used primarily for changing diapers, it makes sense to keep a good supply on hand. Whether you choose disposable or cloth diapers, keep at least a day's supply within easy reach. Hanging organizers are great for holding a stack of diapers without cluttering the table surface and are sold in a variety of patterns to match any nursery décor. A diaper pail or dedicated garbage can should be placed near the table for easy disposal.

Bottom Cleaning

You'll need something to clean your baby's bottom during diaper changes. Disposable wipes are the most convenient option. Keep a tub on the top of the changing table and spare packages on a nearby shelf. Another option is to use a soft washcloth and water, but this requires setting up the water basin before taking your baby to the changing table or keeping a bottle of room-temperature water in the room. Cotton balls moistened with baby oil will also work.

Balms, Ointments and Creams

Regular use of barrier ointment can help prevent diaper rash, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are many products on the market for sensitive baby bottoms spanning every price range, including some made with all-natural ingredients. A simple petroleum jelly or a cream containing zinc oxide will also suffice. The American Academy of Physicians recommends against use of baby powder because of the risk of aspiration.

Change of Clothes

Since even the best diaper can leak at times and surprises can occur when the diaper comes off, it is a good idea to keep a change of clothes for your baby on the changing table for those unexpected messes. If you are low on space, a few extra onesies can be folded up compactly and stashed on a shelf. You may want to consider keeping a spare shirt on hand for yourself as well, just in case.

Distraction

Babies have short attention spans and it can be very difficult to keep them still when you're trying to clean up the results of that first taste of prunes or put on that adorable three-piece outfit for the first professional photo shoot. A small engaging toy can go a long way to keeping baby's attention. Try using a special toy specifically for changing time and swap it out when your baby becomes bored with it.
