How to Put on a Weight Belt

Weight belts are many times essential for scuba diving. Most people are naturally buoyant, unless they have a very low body-fat percentage, and scuba gear tends to be very buoyant as well. It would be impossible to get deep in the water without a weight belt, but these can also be tricky to use. A belt that's too heavy will cause you to sink in the water, and you won't be able to get back above water without abandoning the belt.

Tips and Warnings

  • Have an instructor or scuba leader check your diving weight before entering the water. Before putting on the weight belt, set it on the ground, clip it together and test the emergency release to make sure it works. Choose a weight belt that accommodates block and shot weight and has mesh pouches to let water drain from the pouches. Otherwise, you may struggle to get out of the water with the added water weight.
