Fortaz is a brand name for ceftazidime, a cephalosporin antibiotic used in the treatment of various bacteriological infections in the human body. Fortaz, a prescribtion-level medication administered through injection, can limit the growth of bacteria and kill them. It is not for use with common maladies such as the flu or colds, or for viral infections.
Typical
The use of ceftazidime may cause some side effects. While these types have been reported infrequently, they should cause some concern and you need to speak with your physician as soon as possible. These typical effects include white patches on the tongue, white patches in the throat or mouth, abdominal cramps, abdominal tenderness, bloating, weight loss, skin discoloration, typically blue, bodily weakness, diarrhea with blood, discharge from the vagina that is white and thick but has no or nearly no smell, a fever, leg swelling, foot swelling, thirstiness, injection site swelling, genital itching, bodily pain, tiredness or pain that occurs while engaging in sexual intercourse.
Rare
Rare side effects from Fortaz have been reported by patients taking the medication, according to the Mayo Clinic. This means that while these types of effects may occur, they aren't typical. These also require a doctor's attention. They include pain in the legs, pain in the abdomen, pain in the back, skin yellowing, eye yellowing, breathing problems, dizziness, wheezing, rapid heartbeat, nosebleeds, itching, hives, skin paleness, decreased appetite, bleeding in the gums, swallowing difficulties, chills, a cough, burning sensations in the skin, crawling sensations, tingling sensations, headaches, bodily swelling, a rash on the skin, chest tightness, facial swelling and swelling that is similar to hives on the genitals, face, feet, eyelids, legs, lips, hands, throat or tongue.
Reported
According to the Mayo Clinic, some side effects have been reported but have not been categorized as rare or common since the incidence of the effects among users of the medication is not known. These effects include agitation, paralysis, chest pain, confusion, gaining weight, seizures, vomiting that may include blood, reduced urination, excessive bleeding from minor injuries, pain or swelling in the glands, unusual odor on the breath, difficulty breathing, discolored stools or urine, hallucinations, drowsiness, hypertension, irritability, unconsciousness or twitching muscles.
