Diflorasone Side Effects

Diflorasone diacetate, marketed as Psorcon E Emollient Cream, is a corticosteroid medication used to treat inflammation and itchiness in the skin, known as dermatitis. It also may be used to treat psoriasis and other skin conditions. Psorcon is applied directly to the skin from one of three tube sizes: 15, 30 or 60 grams. It also may be used with a dressing for the skin.

Permanent

The use of diflorasone diacetate cream may produce some side effects at the area of application that may be permanent, such as thinning or atrophying of the skin that may cause striae or stretchmarks. Another permanent side effect may be telangiectasia, a swelling of blood vessels that will appear through the skin.

Discoloration and Weakness

Psorcon E Emollient Cream may lighten the skin color at the area of application. This side effect most often is temporary and it can affect people with darker skin tones more than people with lighter skin. Its use also may produce an allergic reaction. Other possibilities include the tendency to bruise easily or acquiring infections more easily.

Other Surface Problems

Some other common side effects that may occur on the skin include itching; burning; skin irritation or dryness; inflammation of hair follicles called folliculitis; hypertrichosis, a condition in which excess hair grows on the body; and perioral dermatitis, a condition that creates red papules, or bumps, near the mouth.

Systemic

Because corticosteroids that are applied topically can be absorbed into the bloodstream, other side effects can occur that may not manifest only on the area to which they are applied. If too much diflorasone diacetate is absorbed into the blood, the suppression of natural steroids may occur. Especially in children, this may affect how they grow by suspending the process. Another possible result, although more commonly from oral corticosteroid use, is Cushing's syndrome. This occurs, according to the Mayo Clinic, when the body has too much cortisol, a hormone. Cushing's Syndrom can cause hypertension, loss of bone, a hump of fat on the shoulders, facial rounding, discolored stretchmarks or diabetes.
