The American Council on Exercise (ACE) released a notice that listed the best Wii Fit games for losing weight and burning calories. According to the release, playing video game sports such as boxing, tennis, baseball, bowling and golf burns calories. The study was conducted in response to media reports of the supposedly alarming amount of time children and adults spend in front of the television or playing video games. However, the Wii can be used as an indoors workout tool in conjunction with the fun of video game play.
Rhythm Boxing
Rhythm Boxing for the Wii Fit was voted as one of the best games for burning calories. Rhythm Boxing provides a cardio workout that also works the upper body, especially the arms and chest. A 30-minute workout playing Rhythm Boxing burns a total of 216 calories. Most gamers will play the game for much longer than 30 minutes, so playing this game burns hundreds of calories for a long-term player. Rhythm Boxing makes the player step on and off the Wii Fit, creating a step-like workout. Players are then required to use a punch motion to fight the opponent, which works the upper body.
Tennis
Virtua Tennis 2009 and Family Tennis for the Wii came in second for the most calories burned. These two games work the arms and chest and provide a cardio workout. Thirty minutes of playing a tennis game on the Wii burns approximately 159 calories. As with boxing games, most gamers play the game for much longer than 30 minutes, so more calories are burned. Players work the upper chest area when they serve during the game and when returning the ball. Secondly, players move left and right to catch the ball. This works the thighs and buttocks and gives the player a cardio workout.
Baseball
Backyard Baseball and Baseball Blast are two games that burn approximately 135 calories after 30 minutes. Baseball Blast allows more than one player to participate, so it's considered a good family game. These games provide a mostly upper body workout since movement is limited. However, it is still listed as the third-best calorie-burning workout for the Nintendo Wii. Players emulate a baseball player by standing in place and swinging the game controller, similar to swinging a bat. This works the abs, chest and arms.
