Indoor hockey is a modified version of outdoor field hockey that was devised in the 1950s in Europe so players could play year-round. Indoor hockey can be played on any smooth, hard surface with a 44-meter by 22-meter area. For the indoor game, 10 cm boards are placed along the length of the pitch to keep the ball in play and the game moving quickly. Two teams play against one another, using the "hooked" sticks and ball common in field hockey.

Step 1

Send six players onto the pitch for each team. One goalie and five players, divided into attackers and defenders. Attackers and defenders overlap positions in the indoor game.

Step 2

Pass the ball from player to player by "pushing" it with your stick. No hitting or flicking the ball is permitted in indoor hockey.

Step 3

Score field goals by shooting the puck past the goalie while standing inside the shooting circle, which is a semi-circle in front of each goal. Any field goals scored from outside the circle will not count.

Step 4

Take a penalty corner by standing off in the corner and passing to one of your teammates in the shooting circle. Corners are awarded when the defending team commits a fouls inside the shooting circle.

Step 5

Shoot a penalty stroke by standing 7 meters in front of the goal and taking a shot on the goalie. Penalty strokes are awarded when the defending team prevents the offense from scoring a goal by breaking a rule.

Tips and Warnings

  • Play the game in two, 20-minute halves, and use two qualified umpires to officiate. Players are not permitted to use their feet to move the ball. Only the goalie can use his feet.
